What is a non-toxic etching?

Traditionally, printmaking has used a combination of acids and solvents to etch an image into a plate. Today, there are many alternatives. These images were made using a light-sensitive film emulsion. A photographic halftone or a hand-drawn image on a transparency is placed on the plate and then exposed to a strong light source. It is developed in soda ash, then inked and printed in the traditional manner. Clean-up is done with vegetable oil- no solvents are used.
